Immunisation update for over 70’s

On 1st July 2020, the National Immunisation Schedule was updated in regards to pneumococcal vaccine for older people. Previously, all those over the age of 65 were entitled to a government funded vaccine against pneumococcal disease (Pneumovax 23). Following the change to the schedule, a new vaccine is available and recommended for all those people over the age of 70 (Prevenar 13).

Pneumococcal disease is caused by infection with the bacteria Streptococcus pneumonia. Infection can cause a variety of diseases including pneumonia (infection of the lungs), otitis media (infection of the middle ear) and meningitis (infection of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord).

If you have recently turned 70, you are able to receive both Prevenar 13 and Zostavax (immunisation against shingles) as government funded vaccines. It is safe to receive both vaccines at the same visit, and they will usually be given in separate arms.

Please book an appointment with the doctor of your choice for these immunisations.

If you were previously given Pneumovax 23 when you were 65, you should still receive a single one-off dose of Prevenar 13. If Pneumovax 23 was given to you within the last 12 months, it is important that you wait at least 12 months after that vaccination before having Prevenar 13.
